When the characters lack so much agency, the emotional investment they lack is mirrored to me as well. While the mangaka may want to portray the MCs as crushing on each other, their actions are so distinctly drone-like that the pretext doesn't even matter.

For me, it doesn't need to be a super good plot, just engaging enough. In doujins, the plot adds spice to the story, otherwise it's just seeing a compilation of images, and you can do just fine with r34. No matter how good Seto is aty drawing, context is everything in this medium, and he's failed to deliver since Chitose.

You don't need to write a masterpiece either, just look at Hinamix (really, if you haven't checked it out, do it); a very similar story.
