Teotihuacan firmly rejected mayan writing in favor of pictographic systems and they were basically the rome of mesoamerica, so I guess maybe because of them they associated readable script with lack of class.

Even during the Warring States Era, every state had its own writing system, similar but in some cases simply unintelligible. After unification to the Qin Empire, the writing system was standardized which was a huge achievement. Every noble, scholar, bureaucrat, had to learn this new system. The benefit was that every dialect now had a common writing system, even if they couldn't understand each other. The southern Chu couldn't understand wtf people from the former Dai state were saying, but they could write out. It wasn't uncommon for this psuedo-text message format for bureacrats from remote regions like Nanzhong to communicate to the imperial court through just writing out their messages and having a eunuch read it out lout. So you got a writing system that is used by the elite/scholar class, almost exclusively and it was a massive pain to implement the first time around that it's a miracle it got implemented in the first place. These elites have a vested interest in maintaining the writing system (conservatives in power hate change). It's like the StarCraft 2 Balance Council where SC2 pros were extremely conservative in their balancing, or made it balanced to favor pro play instead of casual play. There was no reason or impetus for change. And even if there was, such reform would have been huge, costly, and resisted at the institutional level by millions. Centuries of tradition would need to be undone. That's why one of Communist China's crowning achievements was the implementation of simplified Chinese and standardization of Beijing Mandarin dialect.Even in Korea, when King Sejong created Hangul for the peasants to learn the language easier, the elites resisted and he just exiled them. Korea is of course a vastly smaller country, so it wasn't as difficult as implementing as China. In Japan, they reformed their language roughly with the Meiji Era.
