Sounds New Age but I'm guessing (guessing) it's closer to the original purpose of prayer than what most people seem to think prayer is for.

The reason one prays is not because it seemed so logical to them in their fedora-tipping enlightenment, but because it is required of them by God. Nor have you accurately represented the purpose and function of prayer, but done nothing but skillfully cut down a phantasm of your own imagination. Prayer is not a magical incantation which compels God to do anything, nor is it done for the purpose of satisfying our own cravings nor to make God 'better' than He is. Prayer done with such intent is impious. The purpose of prayer is to draw us into closer communion with Him, both indirectly as we pray in ways which God desires, and directly as we approach His throne in audience as supplicants, relying on Him for all our needs and all good in the world. Thus He answers all those prayers which are fitting to His will, and all pray piously who humbly say "if it be your will". For it would be a great sin to ever presume on God.
It's all about humility.
