The fall of Freud as an authority started in the 1950's with doubts being sown over whether psychoanalysis as a whole worked at all. And mind you this happened despite the therapists of that kind practicing things like selecting patients who had particular traits("young, attractive, intelligent and jewish"), or some creative accountancy among them - a patient who, after 10 years of therapy saw no improvement and stopped was just that, a patient who stopped therapy, therapy didn't fail he just stopped it. For a primer on the fall of freudism, Hans Eysenck wrote a pop-science book on it. It directs to uber serious clinical work if you're interested in that as well.Instead of wondering how did freudism fall one has to ask how did it even rise to prominence? Even at the time the most common reaction among neurologists(psychology existed as a current of thought but not as a separate science prior to Freud, usually it was neurologists published on it, neurologists and of course, Galton) was that "what's true isn't new what's new isn't true", and the whole Jung discovers Freud's old patients and learns they didn't get better affair should've ruined the man but he somehow survived that.
