Mormonism is literally White Islam. Islam is also based on Christianity and you're expected to treat the Bible as supplemental reading in addition to the Quran just as the Mormons do with the Book of Mormon. Just like how Islam believes that Jesus is just one in a line of successive prophets that includes Mohammad, Mormons also believe that Jesus is just one in a line of prophets that includes Joseph Smith. A better question you should be asking is why isn't Mormonism considered its own religion if Islam is?

I think most Christians do regard Mormons as totally separate, although Mormons themselves consider themselves the truest form of Christianity. I think two important differences between Islam and Mormonism is:

1) Mormons think prophesy is ongoing, it didn't end with Joseph Smith whereas with Islam they think Mohammad was the last true prophet, and

2) Mormons believe that there are true actors of God, prophets in some ways, who are not members of their church and in some cases act against it, whereas Islam thinks it's the end-all-be-all

Both of these ideas are divergent from mainstream Christianity so it still doesn't explain why it's not considered a separate religion

Because Mormonism quite simply is not Christianity, like objectively speaking. It's about as Christian as Islam.

Mormons are not christians
they are idolators that think if they follow the book of mormon closely enough they will become gods with their own planets to watch over
