Gary Addison Taylor, the "Royal Oak Sniper", murdered at least four females as part of a two decade long crime spree in three states. The details around his early life are fuzzy; he was born in Howell, Michigan in 1936 where his parents owned a clothing shop and he had one brother. The Howells moved to Treasure Island, Florida after World War II and during Taylor's teen years he for reasons unknown began a spree of attacks on women. His modus operandi was to lurk outside bus stops after dark and attack lone women when they stepped off the bus. On December 24, 1954, Taylor assaulted a 39 year old woman as she stepped off a bus in St. Petersburg. The victim was beaten with a wrench and almost died. He committed 15 more attacks over the next month before finally being caught and earning the nickname "The Bus Stop Marauder." Taylor was charged with attempted murder with a deadly weapon, but the victim in the St. Petersburg attack failed to show up in court to testify so he was acquitted by a jury. He and his parents moved back to Michigan shortly afterwards.

On December 23, 1956, he shot and wounded a teenage girl in a drive-by attack in Royal Oak. Taylor shot at several females in drive-bys over the next month but missed. On February 7, 1957, Taylor shot a 19 year old woman named Shirley Eland in the shoulder. He then fired at two women standing at a bus stop. The bullet cut through their coats but they were unharmed. Taylor continued firing at random targets, but nobody was injured except when an 11 year old girl was grazed by a bullet as it crashed through her living room window. Several witnesses reported that the sniper was driving a two tone black-and-white '55 Chevrolet. Police found the car and Taylor led them on a high speed chase that ended in his capture. He had a rifle in the car. Taylor could not offer any particular explanation for his crimes except that he wanted to shoot women and had always had these urges since he was a child. "It's a sex drive compulsion," he said.

For the next decade, Taylor was in and out of mental institutions--a psychiatrist named Dr. Clinton Mumby testified that he had an "unreasonable" anger against women and might kill someone someday. Mumby believed Taylor should never be unleashed on society again, and a Detroit PD detective called him "one of the most dangerous persons I ever came into contact with." He was committed to Ionia State Hospital starting March 28, 1957. In captivity, Taylor acted entirely normal and harmless. He was later sent to a different institution in Detroit and granted permission to attend a trade school.

One day in 1960, Taylor obtained a furlough to attend a welding class. He went to a Detroit woman's home, convinced her to let him inside, and raped and robbed her. A year later, on another furlough, Taylor threatened the manager of a boardinghouse and her daughter with a knife. He was not charged in either incident and was instead simply put back in Ionia.

Taylor remained in the hospital for 11 years. By 1972, the state was obliged to let him go as they could not legally detain him unless he was re-certified as mentally ill and a possible danger to others. Dr. Ames Robey believed Taylor's problem was a personality one and not a treatable condition. However, he believed Taylor would be stable as long as he avoided alcohol and took his medication. After getting released, he got married and moved with his wife Helen to Onstead--part of the conditions for Taylor's release was that he had to report back to the hospital regularly to obtain medication. After about a year of this, Taylor and his wife decided to skip town and move out to Seattle. The hospital authorities never bothered reporting him missing until early 1975, by which time it was too late and four women were dead.

On November 27, 1973, a 22 year old newlywed woman named Vonnie Stuth went missing from her Eumenclaw home. Taylor was suspected in her death, but although police took him in for interrogation, they didn't know he was a fugitive from Michigan and had to let him go. By the time Michigan finally bothered reporting Taylor missing, he had fled to Texas. On May 20, 1975, Taylor was arrested in Houston for raping a pregnant teenager. He quickly confessed to four murders, including Vonnie Stuth and a 21 year old woman named Susan Jackson, who had been seen leaving a bar with him. Jackson was found a few days later, bound with a dog leash and stuffed in a garbage bag. Stuth was found buried behind Taylor's home in Eumenclaw, shot in the head.

In addition, he confessed to murdering two other women in Michigan and burying them in his backyard before fleeing that state (thus explaining why he left Michigan so hastily). The victims, Lee Fletcher, 25, and Debbie Heneman, 23, both Toledo, Ohio natives, were found wrapped in plastic bags and bound with rope and electrical cords--they had last been seen outside a Toledo restaurant arranging to "meet with somebody", according to a witness. Taylor was also suspected in the murder of a 21 year old topless dancer in Houston during his sojourn there. Taylor was suspected in six other Washington murders, but he would be cleared of them and they are now blamed on serial killer Ted Bundy, but authorities in Texas, Michigan, and California believe he was responsible for 20 unsolved murders in their states. Convicted in Washington of murdering Vonnie Stuth, Taylor received life in prison in April 1976.

He was also suspected in the disappearance of Sandra Horwath, a 33 year old mother of three young girls who disappeared from Ann Arbor, Michigan on October 1, 1973. Detectives tried to talk to Taylor about Horwath in 2022, but the 86 year old, still serving his sentence at Washington's Walla Walla state penitentiary, refused to speak with them.
