There was a core of ridiculously smart people that all knew each other and bounced ideas of each other, and they were inheriting intellectual momentum that went back all the way to the 1600's when they first calculated the speed of light. We already figured out all the easy stuff in physics, anything else is probably beyond the realms that human intelligence is capable of.
