Why does modern vexillology and flag design suck so much ass?
>>
>>17980237
vexillologists are the most lamest dorks out there because for people who supposedly love flags they sure hate every single flag out there that has a little bit of personality just because a stupid pamphlet says so
>>
>>17980349
this
>>17980237
Flags are a modern concept and alien to most people outside of Europe, people in Africa or say the middle east do not care nor feel the need to be represented by a flag, so bad designs follow. Outside of flags made by Liberal nationalists in the 1800's, most designs have already historically sucked
>>
>>17980237
Because flag designs originate from chivalric heraldry, whereas vexillology originates from neoliberal corpoworld

would be perfection if the Lion had a better design, particularly the face. Other than that I love it.

A bunch of literal redditors convinced the world that the number one holy unbreakable rule of flag design is that they must all be le simple and flat so that "even a child can draw it", but even they recognize tricolors are too simple and overdone, so you get shit like that where it's both boring and too much

yet another shitty /pol/troon chimpout thread
the most earthshattering flag design was the tricolore, which is literally just 3 vertical bars
the minnesota flag isn't especially good but its fine. you complain its "generic shit" but you want to go back to being the same as how many other states, just a plain blue field with the state seal shat out in the center?

Blue field and "Seal," ignoring the fact that many are unique from actual state seals, is perfectly fine. The hatred for them is overblown, and they have far more history than a random star on a blue field

>you complain its "generic shit" but you want to go back to being the same as how many other states, just a plain blue field with the state seal shat out in the center?
The thing I find a little ironic is those generic blue flags with the state seal also have a mass-produced (rather "industrial" quality) when they were adopted. What is happening now are states changing these flags to make their state symbol more uniquely identifiable, but the simplistic designs end up also having a "samey" effect.

You know what I really think it's about? Economics. There's a whole trend to move away from globalization and towards making things in the U.S., which means states competing with each other more, so changing the flags to have a more unique look is a way of differentiating the "brand" which can go on "local" products.

I'm from Texas as well which has long had a whole craze about attaching "Texas" to everything. I was struck by this going into Walmart recently and seeing that the corporate office (based in Arkansas) turned the aisles into some kind of Texas version of the Nuremberg rally. There are Texas flags hanging down from the ceiling, images of the state, and signs everyone broadcasting that Texans are loyal to the Walmart brand. But there's also H.E.B which is actually based in Texas.
>>
>>17981896
From this image you can see why Minnesota changed it, otherwise it wouldn’t have been different then the ones from Oregon to maine, navy blue with a state seal, you do have to differentiate yourself as a state like Texas or California if you want to make it a marketable brand
>>
The reason South Africa’s post-apartheid “Y” flag works so well is because it required decisive breaks with the past.

The Five Principles are:

1. Keep It Simple. The flag should be so simple that a child can draw it from memory.
2. Use Meaningful Symbolism. The flag's images, colors, or patterns should relate to what it symbolizes.
3. Use 2 or 3 Basic Colors. Limit the number of colors on the flag to three which contrast well and come from the standard color set.
4. No Lettering or Seals. Never use writing of any kind or an organization's seal.
5. Be Distinctive or Be Related. Avoid duplicating other flags, but use similarities to show connections.

Minnesota's old flag was ass and I'm tired of pretending it wasn't
"state seal on a dark blue background" just doesn't look good and is easily confused for the flags of other states. If a state has a decent seal (and Minnesota didn't, the new seal looks better too) than make it the flag in its entirety or do a flag based on it, don't put it in a tiny circle where no one can make out what's being depicted

Looks like a complicated coat of arms transferred to flag. I like the idea, but I also think heraldry > flags. Heraldry should appear more often on flags. The coat of arms on the old Canadian flag was perfect and the new flag should have had the CoA instead of a fucking leaf.

I'm from New York and I really like our state flag even though it's one of the le evil state coat of arms on a blue field flags.

To me the seal in the center shows the hudson valley, with a masted ship and a sloop, symbolize both inland and international commerce. The Eagle perched atop the globe centered on the Atlantic also represents New York's importance for American commerce, connecting America to the world. To the sides of the seal you have liberty and justice. Note how liberty is kicking away a crown and justice has a sword ready to fight tyranny. The banner says excelsior, which is latin for "ever upward" or "onward and upward" a fitting motto for the ambition and optimism of The Empire State.

Anyone else remember in 2004 when Iraq designed a new flag but it was rejected because it didn't look like every other Arab flag? They even said they thought it looked too much like Israel's flag, what?

I thought it was cool, the three stripes represent the sunni shia and kurds of Iraq, and also evoke the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.

> Introduced in 2001 and published in print in 2006, "Good" Flag, "Bad" Flag has been translated into ten languages. "Good" Flag, "Bad" Flag, compiled by Ted Kaye from the expert wisdom of over 20 vexillologists/vexillographers, has become a classic resource for those wishing to design or re-design a flag. The booklet lays out five basic principles for good flag design, and then shows examples of flags that follow them and flags that disregard them, all illustrated in color.

Not a huge fan of the NYC flag. The color choice is good for the tricolor, but I feel like the seal is too divorced from anything really relevant to New York today, although I do appreciate its representation of NYC's Dutch origins through the Dutchman, beavers, windmill, and flour barrels. Btw, the dutchman is holding a water depth measuring tool apparently, not a noose. But the depiction of the shirtless indian wearing a breech cloth with a feather in his hair isn't great. It's a stereotypical depiction, and while the Munsee Lenape who lived here did wear breechcloths in the summer they also wore finely made fur robes and elkskin breeches, especially for elites. It's basically like representing one side in a suit while the other is wearing a t-shirt and jeans to make him look like a slob.

Memphis is sad, was the largest city in population and economics for large periods and yet the government and culture of TN almost considered it part of Arkansas or Mississippi mostly.

Consider all 4 capital cities of Tennessee were either in the center of the state or the eastern part.

Even a lot of locals in Memphis (Fred Smith and Elvis were from Northern MS) identify more with the tri-state than Nashville east.

Pittsburgh has a similar fate in Pennsylvania I think.
>>
>>17982767
yeah its a shame, lots of history there but so much crime and poverty as well. It feels like in Tennessee Nashville is seen as the future while Memphis is in the state's rear view mirror, which I think is a huge shame because that city has a lot to offer if it could fix some of its worse problems.

Most iconic flags were not the result of people going "hey, we should have a flag, let's design one". They developed in random, organic ways, usually had many differnt versions until they got standardized. That alone took care of the "meaningful symbolism" part.

Most of the modern flags people don't like are made by local regional governments at peace time, and they look for important things in their region to put on the flag, but these things are usually boring. Most regions have some dominant river or mountain, or an industry they are famous for. Than you have to make a minimalist representation of that, because all these people read 'Good Flag Bad Flag.' Of course they produce lot of boring, generic flags.

In Europe, most settlements have a coat of arms, and when you look at the CoAs of a lot of small towns, they quickly get very boring and generic. Most of those places have no intersting history, so they are usually combination of pictures of churches, crops, some hills or rivers, agricultural tools, maybe local wildlife etc. At least they look nice, now imagine if you had to simplify them to flags with only 3 colors.

IMO the real reason this flag is so shit is because it blends in with the sky too much. Flags are meant to be easy to identify from a distance as they are meant to signify the identity of the flag bearer, whether its for military, maritime, diplomatic, or territorial purposes.
