Coffee was an Islamic drink from the 9th Century on, and was brought to Pope Clement VIII (1536-1605) to make a judgement call whether Christians were permitted to drink it. According to legend, he wanted to try it before deciding. He liked it so much, allegedly stated “This devil’s drink is delicious. We should cheat the devil by baptizing it.”Thus, coffee spread quickly throughout Europe.

I’ve only started drinking coffee after having a kid. Beforehand, I thought it was pretty gay how people obsess over it and drop tons of money on starbucks. I still think that’s gay, but I appreciate it the drink itself now.
>>17980983>How did it become one of the most important commodities in the world? If you're a coffee drinker, go 1 month without any caffeine, then have a cup of strong, freshly brewed coffee. I did it and felt like fucking superman.
>>17980983>How did it become one of the most important commodities in the world?Easy to transport and store, shitty commodity grade beans still provide a caffeine kick, no stigma, easy to brew at home.
>>17980983It's the drug that built the modern world. The enlightenment, capitalism, industrial revolution... Society traded being drunk for being caffeinated and finally got stuff done.
