When did the intercession of saints become a thing in Islam? Was it more common in North Africa due to previous Christian ties/heritage?

Also, did Christian pilgrims during the Middle Ages ever do pilgrimages to places that were not in Europe or Jerusalem?
>>
There were occasional long-range pilgrimages to holy sites in the Middle East, especially via trade networks, but these were rare and risky.

Tawassul (seeking intercession) has always been a thing since the time of the Prophet and is endorsed by the relied-upon position of all four Sunni schools of jurisprudence (and Shias too, of course). Ibn Taymiyyah is pretty much the first major person to consider it forbidden, and then you have post-1700s Salafis/Wahhabis who consider it idolatry, similar to how Protestants consider Catholic and Orthodox intercession to be idolatry. I guess you could say seeking it from the dead really properly started after the Prophet's death as there are narrations from the reign of the Caliph Uthman that describe people seeking the (now dead) Prophet's intercession.

Yes i read that the closest thing to tourism back then would have been some form of pilgrimage to a holy place because it was one of the only times people left their regions for a reason not related to business
