He was obviously acting on orders, and got abandoned by his precious Fuhrer when he failed.
You think somebody in the upper echelons of a major state, during a world war, can just get on a plane and fly away without anyone being aware of it until it's too late to stop him? JD Vance couldn't go for an unannounced drive down to the local corner store without hundreds of secret service members knowing about it, and the US is not in a world war at the moment.

doesn’t matter, he was on the losing side so he had to be punished

If Hitler wanted to secretly negotiate with England do you think he would choose someone as high profile as Hess to carry the message? Especially as such negotiations would have to be kept hidden from Stalin.
Hitler actually had to write Stalin to assure him that Hess was a traitor and no such negotiations with England were taking place

he actually succeeded(sort of)
the deal was made and the attack against ussr was the proof of hitler good will, then the uk forgot about it
that is why hitler was so sure about reverse of alliance coming soon(tm)
