Jewish post-enlightenment are vastly different from pre-enlightenment. Jews didn't act like they do now where they are mostly assimilated. They lived in their own community and acted like hasidic and haredi jews of today. To the locals they were a nuisance with a sense of superiority because they thought they were chosen people. The only other interaction with locals and the reason they were there in the first place was to take the wealth of the locals for themselves in the most greediest ways possible. It's not surprising they were constantly hated everywhere they went.
