I have herd that India was never supposed to be one massive country, and that some figured that post-Raj India would be multiple nations.

How should it have been split up, and which of the resultant Indian nations would have been the most powerful/prosperous?

Also interested in any 19th Century examples of romantic nationalism in India-ie, any groups or movements who wanted to see an independent Indian nation founded in a similar manner to European nationalist movements.

Would it even make sense for such a varied and vast region?

The north without southern gibs would be a hellscape beyond measure, I can imagine a few Muslim warlords conquering it and splitting it between a Bengali and Punjabi led sultanate that would remain poor while the south is more prosperous

I'm imagining a scenario where we get a bunch of wealthy southern states and then the north ends up being a weird Sultanate. 21st Century scramble for India would be funny

If you were to carve out Bengal, it might have been the most prosperous. It was already densely populated, and rich inrice and jute exports. Historically, Bangladesh later struggled economically, but West Bengal could be prosperous.

That weird looking part in the East should just be its own country.

The brits never had plans for anything other than the two state Hindustan/Muslimstan solution. Even the option of "independence" presented to Hyderabad was never intended to actually be exercised
