does your town/neighbourhood/area have a "local hero?" as in someone who lives VERY locally (not just the same city/broad area; local to YOU) that is revered by your community or by others?

who is it and why? multiple examples welcome

Phoenix Jones. He serves the community in just about every way you can imagine.

I guess I should have said that 25 year rule obviously applies, like it should for the rest of the board

Apparently, there was a semi-famous historian who lived in my village.

How many iraqi children did he rape?

Yeah, we have Joe McCann.

Hilariously, most of the people who revere him would have hated his politics, because he was a Leninist.
>born and raised in Belfast, on the Falls Road
>highly interested in politics from a young age, grew up as politics in northern ireland continued to heat up
>joined the Fianna Éireann (IRA youth) at age 12, then the IRA later on
>became Officer Commanding of the Belfast Brigade 3rd Battalion
>Falls Curfew begins, thousands of British soldiers start pouring into the Falls Road, intending to arrest and imprison hundreds without trial
>Joe McCann and his men set up in their local bakery
>They become entrenched there overnight, holding the British back
>Rest of the local IRA (and many non IRA people who were targeted for arrest) managed to escape as a result
>Successful defence; British army unable to penetrate the small area he was defending

He can be see in picrel, one of the more famous photographs of the early era of the Troubles. He is knelt next to his flag, holding his M1 Carbine. Joe died at age 24 a couple of years later; at the time he was among the most wanted by the RUC, and was spotted while in Belfast. The RUC tipped off the 1st Battalion of the British Parachute Regiment, who moved in with the RUC to arrest him.

When apprehended by an RUC officer he resisted arrest and fled-and was shot. Some have suggested his death was a conspiracy, and that he was betrayed by Official IRA higher ups who wanted a ceasefire while McCann was keen to fight.
