At some point the aging materialists will not only realize that the future belongs to the Amish etc, they will also realize that their very own worldview entails that they truly have no reason to care about the future past their own deaths. They won't be in it after all, or so they believe. If they do care about the shape of the distant future, however, they must face the fact that they aren't as committed to materialism as they thought they were. Maybe then they'll convert themselves rather than trying to convert others, although it'll be too late to fix their fertility after the fact.
