No Romans were putting knives to peoples necks telling them to worship Jupiter, as long as people just participated in public offerings and celebrations because, to them, it was necessary to please the Gods in order to keep the state running smoothly. Ancient religions are mostly orthopraxic, not orthodoxic, meaning the Romans didn't give a shit what you believed in, just whether you did what you were expected to do.
This is a good argument. Once Christianity became dominant, it did suppress pagan traditions, closing temples, outlawing sacrifices, and, yes, reinterpreting art and texts. The Christian cultural revolution dismantled much of the Greco-Roman religious heritage.
