Having an organised state religion might be beneficial overall because it's a way to reign in and control the more schizophrenic spiritualist impulses of humanity. Like I'll take the Catholic Church any day over whatever New Age post-proddie syncretic shit is currently being cooked on TikTok.
I'm saying this as an atheist.

The point of religion isn't to reign in schizophrenics, they'll go too far with their belief systems no matter what. The point of religion is to keep the poor from eating the rich.

you forgot to mention, that, as much as the Catholic Church is criticizable on many things, they historically gone through many reforms to try and align their systems with the message their supposed to spread.
>the pope is getting controled by interest groups from Rome and beyond
Make the papacy a closed election of clergymen
>nobles are appointing clergymen through sheer nepotism
declare that only the church can do that.
>The church is corrupt, the bible is misinterpreted and the clergymen are incompetent
Council of Trent.

it's not like they didnt TRY.
