This is mostly nonsense. These "kingdoms" and "Empires" were little more than collections of loosely affiliated villages for the most part. There were a couple actually powerful, centralized states, usually near the coasts, but inland it was nothing but tribal confederations that European explorers puffed up in their diplomacy to make them feel more important. Not just Chief so-and-so, but KING so-and-so. And if he ruled over a large confederation, why, they might even address him as Emperor so-and-so!

Loosely affiliated despite paying taxes, having protection, trade ties and status+ often times contributing soldiers?

That doesn't make sense. More so when many actually spent a long time mapping areas and engaging in diplomatic work.
>>
>>18001827
almost all historical empires have functioned that way, only very few had actual centralized bureaucracies

They're using English or European terms to describe the impression that the colonialists had of the way the polities were structured. In some cases it's using terms for Muslim type states.

If it had some 'big man' ruling over a large area, they'd say 'kingdom.' if it had a stable upper class they'd say 'empire.' If it was a council of a lot of 'big men' they'd say 'federation.' If it had a Muslim religious structure of some kind, they'd say 'caliphate.'

This map always bugs me because it seemingly doesn't show the at the time already extant Italian Concession at Massawa. It was owned by the fucking rubbatinno company, damn it.
I am too autistic for this world.

with the introduction of guns many of these were set to expand and the tiny ones come under the larger ones, if european colonialism never happend id have my money on the sokoto caliphate, khedivate of egypt, ethiopia, hobyo sultanate, sultanate of zanzibar, luba federation, and the south african republic to split it all up

Normies tend to associate words like "kingdom" and "empire" with wealth and prosperity.
In their mind when you say "king" it means sumptuous clothings, magnificent castles...etc.

That's why blacks and afrocentrists are so adamant to remind us that there were "kingdoms" and "empires" in Africa before colonisation.
Little do they know that most of these "kings" lived in conditions worse than your average peasant in Western Europe at the time.

Because it is a stepping stone for every civilization. Some kind of centralized authority is going to entail that your society has a large enough settlement that it requires codes that must be ingrained to be maintained. Atleast that was the case for Mesopotamia, when sumerian cities grew to a population that they needed irrigation systems built which required a centralized plan and now all of a sudden someone needed to be in charge or you may die, and as settlements grew they had more projects to maintain themselves and this set the foundation of the beuaracratic state.

Then at the very least it should be displayed as property of the Rubattino shipping company. There were Italian troops in Assab by December of 1879. But thanks for correcting me.

Bring back French Algeria. Bring back independent Maasai tribes. Bring back Portuguese Angola. Bring back the Boer Republics. Bring back Kanem Bornu. Bring back the Sokoto Caliphate. Bring back Barotseland. Deport the Oromo back to their homeland on the Southern Border region of Ethiopia and Northenr Kenya.

I need it. I can feel it. Inject it into my veins.

Wasn't that always case until around the industrial era so Europe would brought rise to the modern nation state model around the same time Africa would of been mapped in 1800s
>>
>>18005551
Stupid comparison.
France, and even the HRE, had defined borders in that era are were defined entities.
That map simply shows internal borders.
The Africa map OP posted doesn't do that, they're all completely independent entities.

For exemple the Sokoto caliphate was also a confederation composed of different tribes and warlords that could be decomposed like France and the HRE are on your map, but the map simplies everything as much as possible.
The border gore on OP map is entirely about external borders.
