(1/2) All evidence points to the fact that consciousness doesn't exist in material realm, most likely it's an extradimensional entity(s) which inhabits otherwise dumb and animal-like hominids. My reasons to believe in that are following:
1. Consciousness is divorced from material experience. It's subjective rather than mechanistic, there's no conscious-material, no chemical element that distills into pure conscious.
1.1 Following that, consciousness does not identify yourself with its body. Example: we do not understand our bodies any more than we understand the cars we drive. You do not see yourself as a hand that moves, or a heart that beats, or a digestive tract that pushes feces along or a million other bodily processes. You inhabit the body but you're not any part of it.
2. Human bodies do not operate consciously. The body experience goes without a mind. Example: when you decide to walk somewhere, you simply decide it, but the mechanical act of moving the bodyparts, sending electric signals to jolt the muscles, all done without the conscious awareness. The body knows and acts on its own without the participation of the mind. In fact, you couldn't walk consciously even if you tried, we have no conscious idea how to 'move a leg' precisely to allow for ambulation. Same could be applied to nearly every task, brain-related ones also, like writing or calculating, consciousness only partakes in setting the goal while the unconscious mind does the job on its own (i.e. you do not actively puzzle out the mathematical and productive principles behind typing a post, or solving 20+65, you only will for it to happen).

(2/2) 2.1. Following that, the relationship between consciousness and the body most closely resembles that of a master and slave. As a master, consciousness lords over the body and orders it around, while contributing little to no labor. The body obeys becaues it has no will of its own to disobey, like a horse obeying a rider. A horse will only disobey the rider when it feels its existence endangered, similarly you cannot will your hand to stay on a hot stove. There is no reason for an arrangement like that to evolve naturally, hence awareness is closer to a parasite or a virus that hijacks the brain than a normal component of it.
3. P-zombies clearly exist. These are humans that never found or lost their metaphysical host. By all means these are the most "normal" sapiens, same as every other animal. Lobotomies is another good example, as by damaging the brain they "unplug" the host and revert the human back to its animal state.
4. Babies aren't conscious. If consciousness was innate to humans we'd be born with it, but this is not true. Nobody remembers their early years and babies act more animal than human. Clearly consciousness is imposed on them at some point past birth.
5. Consciousness has no real functions. Consciousness does not contribute to any functions of the body or the brain, even when it comes to "intelligent" tasks, like remembering, creativity, problem-solving and such. A true AI would still not be conscious simply because its not necessary. Why would an organism naturally evolve something so complex yet superfluous?

Actually all available evidence points to consciousness being just the chemicals and electricity in your brain
