>>18005550Kemalism was a copy of the european nationalist movements that formed in the 19th-20th centuries. It was built on a larp and had no foundations whatsoever because ''Turk'' wasn't even a real ethnicity, for the most part it just meant Balkan/Anatolian Muslim, whether native convert or a settler. The original turks from central asia had assimilated centuries before and had gone extinct by that point.It would be better if they had just stuck with Ottoman honestly, instead of building a new identity based on a larp.

>>18005843The problem is that Ottoman is extremely hard to define. They tried for decades to do it and it didn't work. Putting a bunch of mutts into a blender and calling them Turks ended up working much better even though to the non-Turk it seems totally absurd (it's not any less absurd than "Greeks" though). Ottomans were a dynasty, all the territories under their rule had similar overlapping cultural features but it was very difficult to make everyone from Tripoli to Sarajevo to Yemen accept that their identity was based on a Sultan in Istanbul. It was easier however to make Muslims identify with the Ottoman caliph by the time the empire finally became majority-Muslim and that's why the Young Turks started killing Christian minorities
>>18006237Just to give an idea of how batshit insane nationalist movements were in the late-Ottoman era you had Greece, Serbia and Bulgaria all wanting to carve up the remaining Balkan Ottoman territories of Albania, Macedonia and Thrace to their liking. Macedonia to this very day is full of a million different ethnic groups, but that didn't stop independent Macedonian nationalist movements from arising and committing terrorism for their goals despite the fact that it's fucking impossible to define "Macedonia" as a coherent thing at all -- that's why the modern state of North Macedonia adopted the laughable Alexander myth as their definition because there is nothing else that could bind them together (the southern part of Macedonia is still part of Greece today anyway)
The Turks themselves didn't like him. Some reforms, banning the fez, were resisted and culturally alienating.
