On September 18, 1980, Soyuz 38 launched to the Soviet Salyut 6 space station on an Intercosmos mission that included Cuban guest cosmonaut Arnaldo Tayamo Mendez, the first black person in space. The visiting cosmonauts spent nine days at the station; on September 26 they departed and returned to Earth.
