Why didn't South America unified? It's not like they have distinct cultures or histories. They are all kind of the same with different natural resources.

Because they feared mass mobilization of mixed-race populations more than they valued continental unity. Better to rule their own smaller state securely than risk losing power in a big federation.

At time of independence they decided they’d rather be their own thing country rather than split a country with people they couldn’t easily talk to. Also Brazil was Portuguese.
