John Tyler, the traitor President, died in 1862, and became the only POTUS in history to be buried under a flag that was NOT the United States flag. He had actively supported the succession in his later years. One of his more ridiculous claims is that he believed almost every President which came before him, excluded the two Adams and Van Buren, would have supported succession if they were alive in 1861. Was there any validity to this claim? Polk it's certainly plausible, as he had relatives who fought for the Confederates. But the others? Would Washington have been a confederate?
>>18024322That's what they should call it. The war of the American Succession.
Washington fought with men from every state in the Continental Army. I don't think he would have supported secession.
>>18024322did this also include Andrew Jackson despite his threats to make war on and hang the leaders of any state that seceded?
>>18024322You spelled secession wrong
>>18024322Robert E. Lee was a relative of Washington. The descendants of Francis Scott Key and George Mason were also Confederates.
>>18024322Washington heavily supported a more centralized government and while he wasn't exactly opposed to slavery he wasn't exactly very supportive of it either, in other words its doubtful he would have supported the confederate cause in anyway
The Founding generation had a different view on things, they believed slavery was a temporary evil that would go away in time. The generation after them increasingly believed it was a net positive.

>>18024322What was his obsession with succeeding
>>18025468You have to succeed to be presidency
>>18024322>the only POTUS in history to be buried under a flag that was NOT the United States flagIt was an American flag nonetheless. If anything it's far more linked with American identity than the current 50-stars flag, not just because it has a star for Hawaii, which should have never been given statehood, but also because it reflects a period where America's old-stock got replaced.
