Prayer isn't about wanting to get shit. It's about sometimes getting to that point where you're just so spiritually aligned with God that everything in your being is subconsciously driving you to pray to him. To glorify our creator who's mark is imprinted in your very body and soul. It is like breathing.

it's evident that prayer is about asking for things
it's an act of desperation
from the "come on, come on! you piece of shit, just work!" you breathe to yourself to the very explicit "please, god, just let me have this one thing! I promise I'll start going to church if this works out, please"
this desperate attempt to control a chaotic environment is the core of most if not all religions, together with superstition, fear of death, confirmation bias, and virtue signaling
