How widespread was drug use by German soldiers really? Hearing about how all the soliders were methed up is becoming a more popular take but how accurate was it in reality?
>>18027040everyone had meth on all sidesit was cheap and useful
>>18027040Methamphetamine gained popularity among civilians and the Wehrmacht alike and was only in 1942 placed on the list of controlled substances, mainly because the Wehrmacht claimed priority in receiving pervitin. Up until that point Pervitin production had risen to 9 million tablets a year, approximately half of that for civilian (!) use.
Not very widespread at all, but it's a cool factoid to repeat at parties ("you know, those Nitzees were all on meth, and they called it PANZER CHOCOLATE!")
>>18027040It was pretty common. For instance pretty much the entire army was juiced up during the march through the Ardennes because they needed to army to stay awake so the advance wouldn't stop and give the french time to reorganise
>>18027094People genuinely use this bit of trivia to try and dismiss their early successes and present them as unimpressive
>>18027048Allies were more into plain speed.
you are going to war, where 1 mis step and you will be shot by a sniper. Will you take meth/pervitin to enhance your abilities and stay awake/alert for longer or would you prefer going to sleep when tired?
>>18027040All armies used drugs
Very overblown. The British used another variant and they used it more than the Germans
