When did the "Christianity destroyed the Roman Empire" quip start? And why is it so persistent despite being so retarded?

Before even the fall.
Already by 300 there was talk that the struggles Rome was facing was related to the loss of piety and moral change of the Roman people.
When Rome was sacked pagans took it as a sign that the Christian god had abandoned the Christians; and that the pagan gods looked away having been shut out.

>persistent despite being so retarded?
The social changes it brought did contribute to the fall.

Saint Augustine literally has a whole book that's basically debunking people in his time saying that the empire was in decline because of the change in religion post constantine.
This was in 400 AD.

Rome had become a shithole during the times of Sulla already. That's why he became a dictator. These most ancient of all Romans, otherwise so conservative, saw dictatorship as the only way of preserving the power of the noble patricia ns in face of the growing plebeian class, who no longer wanted to just emancipate the native servile class of Rome, but the conquered foreigners as well.
The Imperial formula, prototyped by Caesar and perfectioned by Augustus seemed like the perfect solution. But dating to the times of Caracalla everyone in the Empire, save for the slaves, had a theoretical right to become Emperor. Not only that, but all the other posts of honour in the Empire. Definetly, these liberal measures attracted all kinds of ambitious men into the heart of the Empire, but with time the Romans lost their native character more and more. We had, on one hand, a reactionary debris of the true Romans, and, on the other hand, an evolved version of the old Plebeians who wanted more gibs for foreigners and who kind of, despite being Romans, acted against the interests of the Roman people in favour of more multiculturalism and foreigners in powerful positions.
During the times of Constantine the sole interest holding the muttcluster together was the wealth and greatness produced by a central government over such a large territory. Degeneracy was definetly widespread, in a way similar to the modern West. Had they had mobile phones, they would have done the exact same things with them that we do. Far from using them for the improvement of humanity, they would have provided TikTok and Pornhub for all. Such was the state of affairs in Rome during the times of early Christianity. For some, it may have even been a hope to bring back solidity into an Empire wich perhaps did not seem like it was crumbling, but wich nevertheless had become a corrupt shithole ruled by both whites and all shades of brown.

Because certain "people" (marxists, faggots, atheists, non-Christians) hates Christianity and it's legacy on the Western Civilization so they need to spread this kind of bullshit in a attempt to undermine it. Anyone who has ever read on Roman history will realize that Rome has always been a clusterfuck of a corrupt and dysfunctional State and that it's a miracle it lasted as long as it did. In fact, I would even argue that Christianity helped preserve the empire, especially after it's Western part had fallen but then you read on the Byzantines and realize that they were also corrupt degenerates and Christianity was barely taken seriously there by it's elites.
