What is the actual history of censorship in the UK? It seems like media, expression, and literature was highly-censored up through the 1960's, and then there was a temporary period of relaxation before the censorship started cranking up again in the late-90's.

Comedy routines from the 70's/80's by guys like Bernard Manning or Roy Chubby Brown would surely be illegal today, but they were fine during the 'speech thaw' of their eras. What led to the thaw, and why did it end?

It's possible EU influence led to the thaw, we acceded around that time.
