What if the og Caesar was in reality much more evil and brutal but the master of propaganda, Caesar Octavianus, made sure some of his uncle's deeds are swept under the rug and forgotten.

what if anything nigga

The conquest of Gaul is one of history's most well-documented genocides and it was brutal enough that even many of Caesar's contemporaries at the time considered him a war criminal for it. If Augustus really wanted to white wash his adoptive father's legacy, he probably would've taken measures to see those criticisms weren't surviving records.

>Well documented
Yeah by Caesar
It wasn't a genocide but it should have been

Most historians are fairly certain Caesar killed about a million Gauls and enslaved a million more. If that's not a genocide I don't know what qualifies.

I've always suspected that any acts of opportunism could have been downplayed to make him a benevolent dictator.

>Caesar's contemporaries at the time considered him a war criminal for it
Well him and his contemporaries were all quite corrupt and going through a lot of turmoil in general. Slander and propaganda was just as big then as anytime throughout history, including today. Cicero saw Caesar playing with his hair at some point and it scared him, according to Suetonius if not mistaken, maybe unrelated though. I think they spread the word Caesar was going to rob the treasury and replace the gold with bronze bars also, amongst other rumors which could spread pretty quickly. Taking into account Caesars arrogant and vain behavior, he was still a cut above the rest, in oratory, diplomatic, consulship, and a seasoned soldier/commander. He could beat most legion at swimming, horseback, traversing the environment, etc. He wouldn't forget the people who helped him and you probably wouldn't want to be on his bad side, which maybe we saw with Octavian? I mean Octavian was absolutely brutal toward his and Caesars enemies. Can't say his Uncle would do the same, but who knows? I personally feel sorry for nobody ever, so we are far from the same, obviously.

I think he at least wanted to be seen as the good guy since a lot of the older senetars remembered the Sullan persecutions and the general public was generally tired of wars. If he needed to do something dirty, then he tried his best to do it silently. There were some suspiction events that might have included Caesar, like that time when the governor of Cisalpine Gaul suddenly died and he got command of the province.

Land reform increasingly appears to have been a highly overstated issue, and Octavian was a very cruel ruler that basically delivered the fait accompli to the republic after murdering everyone else in his way. Was Caesar like him though? Seems not to have been, at the very least he was merciful enough that he got himself killed for it.

>Octavian was a very cruel ruler
Cruel doesn't mean bad though. Somehow he managed to stabilize the country and fix the economy.

>he was merciful enough that he got himself killed for it.
And thats exactly why Octavian stabbed first and asked questions never.
