The thing he misunderstood was that peasants uniting in rebellion during feudal times wasn't something that was going to happen under capitalism. That was basically his dream, a Worker Jacquerie.
A big reason is the breakdown of social classes that happened with capitalism. In the middle ages your nobles often had basically nothing in common with their serfs. Many spoke French or Latin or obscurantist court dialects of the vernacular far more fluently than they spoke the language of the masses. The rituals and culture of the courts and noble caste were just totally different from the peasants. And the legal system enforced this difference totally.
Under capitalism this changed. Many of the wealthiest people were former peasants that were either born geniuses or just lucky. Many old nobles were rapidly downwardly mobile.
This basically broke down the cultural barrier between the rich and poor, or at least significantly cracked it open. And this gap hasn't reformed yet. Consistently economic mobility has stayed fairly high and turnover rate in wealth is constant.
At that point the ability for the workers to form a united front against the capitalist class was permanently wrecked.

Culture is the strongest uniting force between people.
The loss of an obvious cultural division between rich and poor heavily damages communist organizing efforts, but it empowers nationalists. Which fits modern politics.

5. The most important one: capitalism is very good at placating people if the entertainment and comforts are cheap, and if the workers have just enough to stay satisfied. The exploitation of workers just shifted to other parts of the world.


All it takes is 1, 2 or 3 well organized worker's protests in the giga-factorys in China and India, and the entire world will basically halt to a standstill. It's not a matter of if, but when....And for that, they are correct, that the worker's really do hold all the power, if they ever were to unite
