Ironically, the earlier instances of it being used were french royalists who were claiming financiers had too much power over the business of the state, due to a circumstance where the state was increasingly indebted to these financial "capitalists" during peace time. The term capitalist pre-dates "capitalism" as referring to these financiers, and capitalism just became the -ism form that criticized this arrangement as politically destabalizing for royal power. Prior to this, it was claimed that the state usually only ran up debts in war time. It was easier for the state to unload war debts because at the end of the war the business was basically done, whereas peace time debts usually were sustaining a peace time political order. So the sovereign didn't feel as at liberty to default on these debts, since it would mean political instability if parts of peace time state capacity suddenly weren't getting paid. Of course, this sense of the word is very far from our modern manner of using it. But what is similar is that the royalists saw a relationship between the state and its creditors as compelling the state to act in certain ways. The modern term broadly shares this connotation, that "capitalism" is the thing forcing people to behave a certain way. The french left increasingly adapted this meaning to the word. I think there are fairly complex influences for why the term has come to have the sense it does today. Too much for a single post. But it is just a theological story about what is happening. It isn't a useful way of understanding the world. Most people tend to have been exposed to the word first, take for granted it must refer to something that exists and then try to figure out what that thing is. They rarely stop to think maybe the word isn't referring to anything real.
