Annexation and control of heavily African territories would have been costly, both militarily and administratively, and the returns for South Africa were minimal compared to Cape Colony.

>>18052778Lesotho is a kingdom located on a mountain and their king called for British protection when the Boers attacked him, so it became a British protectorate until independence in 1966. Difficult terrain, invading it would be a pain in the ass, at least back in the day. No point in annexing it after 1966 as it was already economically dependent on SA and White rule didnt want to bother with another impoverished shithole. Still the case today but Basotho people don't want to be diluted by Zulu and Xhosa dominated SA.
