...or is it our terminally online, 24-hour ragebait news culture exposing everyday shit that makes it feel worse?

both are true simultaneously

Some very important things are a lot better. Some very important things are a lot worse.

Johnson and Nixon deployed the National Guard to occupy cities across the country throughout the 60's and 70's. It's the phone addiction for sure, but also >>18055579 because no one today is old enough to remember how shit every decade has been since forever

Phones are good though because they make you vote for Trump

It's worse, but not due to social media. It's worse due to RACE MIXING.

Jamal isn't the reason Stacy won't give you the time of day, anon. It's because you're an insufferable little shitstain of a human being

You have food in your fridge and will not die from tuberculosis.

Depends on how you look at this. 50 years ago is 1975 and that's obviously dogshit, the 70's were bad and nobody will claim otherwise.
However there's a lot of nuance to it. For instance the property ladder, assuming the US. Averaged cost of a recently sold house per unit of area is about the same as it always was if you adjust for inflation. However somehow there is an issue with buying them. Well... here's the deal - houses used to be smaller. There are two reasons for why they can't be smaller anymore - one is real preference for mcmansions, the other is desegregation. As you can guess neither is something that can realistically be changed, the first is literally what people want the second will be supported by all a American political institutions(including the parties and judiciary).
This can be noted about the majority of things. For instance cars used to be cheaper but they also used to be smaller, have less comfort and the safety standards were crap. Not only an old school car but new wouldn't be allowed to be sold anywhere because it wouldn't meet safety and emission standards but also your usual car buyer wants the gray SUV/Crossover for the urban jungle and highway marshland.
Education costs have increased but so did the attainment rate. People could live without it but just like with housing and cars, we have higher standards now.

That's how it looks as far as most material matters are concerned. As for the digital dystopia I do think there's a breakdown of society of sorts and I'm afraid the only way out is to unplug yourself and make sure people you know get plugged out as well.

Things are a billion times worse. But most people don't even know how bad it is. They can't even identify real problems. Instead they live in their own little meta world with its own problems. Those problems are just as real as the bigger problems, but the difference is most of it is easily dealt with by not investing so much time into social media. The same cannot be said about the real big problems.

Appliances electronics and travel used to cost a lot more. Tv was like $3000 adjusted for inflation
Housing used to cost proportionally less
Cars costed slightly proportionally less
Fewer barriers for applying to a job, because no internet
>>
Life expectancy is up except in a few troubled regions.
