On this day in 1939, Adolf Hitler issued a decree regarding the annexation of the Polish territories, including Pomerania, Greater Poland, and Silesia into the Third Reich.As a result, almost one million Poles were forcefully resettled to the German-occupied General Government established in October 1939 under an apartheid system where they were denied education, the right to use public transit, and rounded up for slave labor to fuel German industry, being hanged or shot by firing squads for trivial offenses or being in a sexual relationship with a German.
The goal was not some sort of Germanization but rather the enslavement, expulsion, and replacement of Poles, genociding them to replace them with colonists from Germany and other Germanic nations.As Hans Frank, Governor-General of the General Government wrote in his diary,>Thanks to the heroic courage of our soldiers, this territory has become German, and the time will come when the valley of the Vistula, from its source to its mouth at the sea, will be as German as the Valley of the Rhine.
He did not annex anything. He rightfully reclaimed german soil.
