Was he a rare and precious benevolent dictator or yet another tyrant?
>>
He clung to Angola, Mozambique, and Guinea-Bissau, and fought protracted, bloody wars there in the 1960s.
>>
>>18056916
His regime had brought a lot of stability to Portugal and oversaw pretty significant economic growth, created budget surpluses and revived economic relations like being a founder member of the European free trade agreement and joining the IMF and world bank.

His colonial policy, whilst bringing a lot of growth to the colonies like the expansion of cotton growth in Africa and the setting up of casinos in Macau, sort of set the stage for the future wars.

The expansion of cotton in Africa lead to food shortages and their subjects becoming increasingly disgruntled and began to brew an independence movement which culminated in the drawn out and expensive colonial wars.

The education he set up was effective at improving literacy and access to education but it still lagged somewhat behind the rest of Western Europe.
>>
>>18056916
Bit of both
>>
>>18056916
Tyrant. Can't even pull off the "muh results" part because Portugal was legitimately lacking in everything.
>>
>>18056983
Fewer than 7k portuguese soldiers died during all of them and in the end they won militarily
>>
>>18056916
dumb retard stuck with 19th century level thinking in 1950s europe.
if he legit had resigned/died in the late 30s mid 40s he would probably be considered one of the greatest statesmen ever, unfortunatly for Portugal he did not.

His economic policy was pretty merchantilism mixed with fascist coorporativism, fantastic for budget surplus, but people dont eat budget surplus.
Alot of fascist appologists and retarded boomers use the literacy growth but that argument even falls flat when you consider that literacy rate was still only around 65% by 1974, when in the same time frame the commies in Russia got to 99%, with a much vaster country.
Not to mention the majority of education was 4th grade level at most, higher education was not common at all.
Regarding colonial policy he was an absolute idiot who , once again was still stuck with a 19th century mentality. Clinging to colonies as source of pride and prestige, even when there were numerous chances to decolonize in a proper and advantageous way he decided to double down on the "luso-tropicalism" rethoric, this not only pretty much made the colonial war inevitable as well as make Portugal the north korea of europe, a pariah state,"proudly alone" as he said.
The most schocking thing is even with all the surplus and glorious empire the average portuguese outside the major cities still lived a medieval existance. I know people born in the 60/70/ that lived in villages with no electricity, running water, paved road, people worked the fileds from sun up to sun down, child labour, hell even shoes were a rarity in rural portugal until mid 80s

>>18058263
closer to 9k plus 15k disabled, in a country with only 8 million is huge plus with more the 100k under arms at all times plus consciption every family here was affected
In angola and mozambique the sutitation was good (especially in mozambique) but in guine was utter hopeless.
That "militarily won" cope is just retardation,
>>
>>18056916
Probably the most competent dictator ever along with Lee Kun-Yew. If all dictators were like these, two, authoritarianism could be considered a viable alternative.

Still fucked up the colonial policy, Lusotropicalism was a retarded idea.
>>
>>18058336
how can he be competent when he held the country back due to pure stubborness.
Like the fucker told an undermaned underarmed garison to fight to the end against the whole indian army, and then spat on them for not doing so. Imagine the level of hard headness to do something like this
>>
>The Portuguese literary historian, António José Saraiva, a communist and a fierce lifelong political opponent of Salazar, claimed that "Salazar was, undoubtedly, one of the most remarkable men in the history of Portugal and possessed a quality that remarkable men do not always have: the right intention."[183]

>António José Saraiva,

opponent of Salazar
Got kicked out of the communist party in 1949.
His brother was the fascist minister of education, and admited Salazarist til the day he died, as well a know revisionist.
Also saying Salazar had the right intention means nothing almost all dictators do. I dont like Salazar but i can say he was humble and ascetic in terms of self enrichement, does not mean he was good person or leader
>>18058409
heaven, deformed dirty feet?... on seccond tought you foot fags love that shit
>>
>>18058427
>deformed dirty feet?
I'm being a little facetious. I like the Arcadian ideal of handsome barefoot shepherds playing on panpipes, but the reality is quite different - even romantic paintings of peasant girls show their feet as being quite ugly. Feet should be clean and soft. But also not deformed by footwear. It is tricky to strike a happy median!

Sorry for the digression ...!
>>
>>18058427
Also - my footfaggotry aside - why does it seem like the English Wikipedia article was written by pro-Salazar revisionists? The legacy section is almost entirely a catalogue of people glazing him
>>
>>18058437
>>18058441
working peoples feet will likely not please your happy median

> why does it seem like the English Wikipedia article was written by pro-Salazar revisionists?
idk never read it, my guess the new wave of muh tradcat zoomies heard about Salazar and took him up as some sort based and redpilled of icon. Ive seen many such cases of this on social media.
Or maybe so english speaking boomer wrote it, but unlikely since you know Salazar tought english was the language of degeneracy and was never put on the curriculim under estado novo, in favour of french
>>
>>18058441
Because he did far more good than bad. Boomers only seethe at him because "Waaa my freedoms! I can't write slop in the newspapers, 25 de Abril sempre!"
It's the reason why he is still widely talked about in Portugal, unlike Mussolini in Italy or Franco in Spain who are like those countries' versions of Voldemort
>>
>>18058326
>closer to 9k plus 15k disabled, in a country with only 8 million is huge plus with more the 100k under arms
By the end half of the army was made up of africans, and 9k is still not a lot, even for a country of 8 million
>>
>>18058478
>It's the reason why he is still widely talked about in Portugal.
Negatively he is widely talked about negatively in Portugal, only fascist apologists and fag boomers from old money families talk positively about salazar.
It the same loud tiny minority that cope and seeth at the bridges name

>>18058486
9k plus 15k disabled is enough for everyone to know someone who got killed or wounded. These numbers also dont account for PTSD that was a major issue, during and after the war.
The military couped the goverment due to war exaustion, you can try and minimize the numbers all you want but it wont change this fact.
Also the war was pretty much lost internationaly and on the home front, like 1 million left the country from the late 50s to 1974, and even some top ministers tried to coup the goverment so they could stop the war
>>
Retard obsessed with balancing the budget.
Ruined the country with his austerity, if he had more power he would ruin it even more like Ceausescu did in Romania, just to pay off the debt

Portugal didn't win militarily in Guinea-Bissau.
>>
Salazar is the reason so many Portuguese migrated to Canada in the 60s and 70s due to poverty in Portugal.

And their daughters like Nelly Furtado ended up getting banged by niggers and other non-whites.
>>
>>18058889
Also chinks. Some Portuguese girls who moved to Canada back then married Chinese guys (descended from the older Chinese community before the 1960s, not the more recent Chinese immigrants post 1960s). The Canadian actress Genevieve Kang has a fourth generation Chinese father and a Portuguese mother born in Portugal.
Just like Chinese who came to Canada since the 1880s, there are also Sikhs who came to BC in Canada since the early 1900s, separate from the newer arrival of Sikhs post 1960s.
Nelly Furtado had a Sikh boyfriend before her current nigger boyfriend.
Portuguese girls dated chinks, niggers and Sikhs after their parents brought them to Canada for a better life.
>>
>>18058466
>and was never put on the curriculim under estado novo, in favour of french

If Portuguese only moved to rural Quebec instead of Anglo speaking Canada, this >>18058904 wouldn't have happened.
The only Chinatown in Quebec is in Montreal.
Meanwhile BC and Ontario both had Chinatowns since the 1880s and BC had Sikhs since the 1900s.
Some Portuguese families moved into BC cities with major Chinatowns and their daughters hooked up with chinks.
Rural Quebec has none of that. It's all white French Catholic.
>>
> lliteracy is OK, no protties no commies
>>
>>18058326
Portugal's birthrate crashed to below replacement after literacy went up and modern electricity and utilities were introduced everywhere.
>>
>>18058928
>If Portuguese only moved to rural Quebec
> It's all white French Catholic.
the majority of Portuguese imigrants went to France
>>18059533
yeah people fucked like rabbits due to no contraceptives plus the need for work force, it was not a good thing
if want growth brith rates,no electricity and utilities might I recomend subsharan africa?
>>
>>18058263
At the end of the war Portugal only controlled coastal enclaves in Guinea-Bissau and the PAIGC guerillas were already transitioning into a conventional army.
>>
>>18058889
>the reason so many Portuguese migrated to Canada in the 60s and 70s due to poverty in Portugal
Happened here in the US too, in specific pockets, Rhode Island and parts of southern Mass being one of them. I'm a descendant of some of them :)

One of my good friends who is descended similarly has family up in Toronto too so it makes sense
>>
>>18058928
Rural areas have not been able to attract migrants ever since they stopped handing out free land to new arrivals, and that's exactly why they're usually so homogenous.
>>
>>18059579
My maternal gradfather fucked off in the 60s to the US.
Acording to family rumor it was New jersey but i never got it confirmed. Apparently i got some aunts and cousins over there, they once came to visit like 30 years ago but my mother basicaly told them to get fucked.
Is there any good data base where i can check stuff like this?
>>
>>18058928
Kamloops, Vancouver and Victoria in BC all had Chinatowns since the 1880s with many fourth and fifth generation Chinese living there. There was also smaller Chinatowns in Toronto in Ontario.
Portuguese moved into all those cities.
>>
>>18059595
Not that I know of beyond poring through Census data, and even then I'm not sure how accessible recent (past ~50 years) censuses are. Sorry I can't help more
>>
>>18059642
its fine I just assumed its a lost cause, but since americans care so much about muh ancesteryi might have stumble upon something.
Like i know the faggots name but at his point he is like 95 years old, so likely dead
>>
>>18059587
They could offer their daughters to the French Canadians in exchange for their land.
Some Portuguese fathers threw a fit over their daughters choice of spouses... after moving right next to Chinatown.
There's no chink dicks to suck in rural areas and they can lock their daughters away in the village.
