Most people lack the capacity to embrace ambiguity, especially in an existential sense. That doesn't make their subsequent delusions any less delusional though.

New atheisms biggest mistake was the assumption that people had become more rational over time when in reality people were just following whoever could come off as the most confident. Thats why something as dumb as the fedora meme did so much damage, because a large chunk of new atheists weren't actual skeptics they were just going along with the vogue at the time rather than any real philosophical understanding, so all it took was photoshopping troll quotes onto pictures of fat men in hats.
Ironically the fedora meme is more an indictment of the integrity of the average person than it was of atheism.
