>>18064785It was working well and a proper American nation was forming: a British base of Anglo culture with very similar genetic groups of Germans, etc., and their cultures being absorbed and integrated. Even Italians (usually not the southern ones) who moved away from the coast and Slavs were being assimilated okay. Some regional differences existed, but a rough nation was forming. Then the entire project was destroyed by again letting in too many dissimilar people. By 1950, it needed another 100 years for the various European ethnicities to fully metastasize into a single identity. While we have mixed and intermarried to great extents, the idea of an “American” became meaningless by being over-inclusive. Now, while all White Americans are really similar, especially culturally, we prefer to look backwards on our ancestry for a more rooted identity instead of being proud to fully assume American as an identity. There are still people proud to be Americans, but even the old stock refer to their old stock ancestry to formulate a more solid identity. Southerners cling more to “Southerner,” which is a much more coherent and exclusive identity than “American.” Compare the American schizophrenia regarding ancestry and identity to a country like Australia. Australia is basically just Brits and Irish with small groups of Greeks or whatever who clearly hold themselves apart. The base of the country has so much in common that it was easy to go into being “Australian.” They don’t feel as much existential need to say “I’m half Scottish and English,” because they’re all that.
