In the Falklands, by waiting for your eyes to adjust to the darkness, wearing hats and berets instead of helmets, then assaulting the Argentine positions and shooting/stabbing anyone wearing a helmet, as its too dark to identify via uniform.

Russia did not have infrared capable attack aircraft until the su25sm3 in the 2000s. The Americans LANTIRN capability was available a little earlier. In either case the pilots could still use commercial night vision goggles or any similar aids themselves. In the gulf war Iraq had better night capabilities due to the fulcrums having IR. This was never necessary because America never attacked Iraqi bases and ran away before there was any chance to use them. Gulf war is really a bad war to discuss night warfare as Iraq had no tankers to fly into American airspace and Iraq did not use air defenses against the f117s and did not even bother to use its tank and aircraft infrared systems to spot and engage them with zsus. Iraq had the 1pn58 infantry night sight made in the seventies so it didn't have any difficulty seeing at night. These could spot aircraft up to 4km altitude or so. If the f117 flew above that then the infrared SAMs could still detect it. For Serbia, they simply shot down two aircraft at night using radar. All of the Russian air defense users have plenty of night vision capability for any SAM they ever made. America actually does not have a significant long range infrared SAM. For tanks Russia had widespread IR systems starting in the sixties. For aircraft starting from the fulcrums all of them had infrared capabilities. Before then the r24 was a long range infrared system. Using infantry infrared sights was the only option for pilots for a long time.

By AN/PVS-2, I meant the AN/PVS-4 night sight, which was developed post-Vietnam incorporating lessons learned from the PVS-1/2.Also the first practical set of NVGs developed for infantry use was the AN/PVS-7 in 1988 (this was the mainstay night vision goggles of US troops during the Gulf War and well into GWOT). There was also the PVS-5 from the Vietnam War, but these were primarily intended for use by aircrews and only saw incredibly limited infantry use.
