Muslim apologetics has to claim things like "Mohammed was illiterate" and denigrate pre-Islamic Arabia, whereas in reality, Arabia supported quite ancient civilizations that had even developed their own scripts. Mohammed himself neither being illiterate nor some goat herder nor other such nonsense. He was a clever bastard that consciously made all of his moves. He married a rich old woman to use her money to fund his banditry, expanding outwards from there. He managed to keep his bandits in line not by promising eternal life but by fucking killing anyone that reneged. It was only after Mohammed that anyone started to "believe" in Islam. Not even Mohammed's uncle who raised him would convert. He only was exempt from the slaughter due to the incredible taboo it would invoke if Mohammed had him killed (similar to how he wouldn't go all the way and fully destroy the Kaaba, instead merging it into his religion).
