From what I've seen it was much more common for northerners to move south than vice versa. All of the colonists and later state residents were constantly pushing at the frontier so that they could own land.

The South was shit for the most part although you didn't have to deal with winter weather and back then it involved a lot more physical labor like chopping firewood and generally a lot of outdoor chores in freezing weather the modern person doesn't have to do.

Freedom of religion, vibrant merchant life, more hospitable for the poor than the more aristocratic Maryland and Virginia, all the needed amenities thanks to B. Frank, intellectual heart of the colonies, furtile soil for farmers, shipping industry the busiest of the colonies, strong growing economy with no economic downturn like Boston, etc.

As another anon said, there has been an explosion of suburban sprawl in the postwar era and especially post 1970s. Annapolis is still a gorgeous old town with a colonial vibe though, and there's many towns and small cities that take good care of their historic downtown areas. I should also note that there are areas that had a reputation for being a lot rougher when they were less diverse. That's anecdotal though.t. I live in MD
