Can we be sure that this is the Holy Spirit at work? I do not trust the majority of Pentacostal churches, nor the general principle behind Pentacostalism. At best, they are misguided in thinking that they can bring back a very unique, possibly one-time feature of the Apostolic era. Often, I think that in the followers' zealousness, they feel so succumbed to the tensions of the moment that they think they are giving themselves to the spirit letting their inhibitions down, whether that is in fact holy or not. I prefer churches without such wild antics on display. Is this very common in mega churches?

"The principal difference between tongue-speakers and non-tongue-speakers was that the glossolalists developed deeply trusting and submissive relationships to the authority figures who introduced them to the practice of glossolalia. Without complete submission to the leader, speaking in tongues was not initiated. In psychotherapy, this is called dependent transference. We noted repeatedly that persons who did not speak in tongues had a different relationship to authority figures than did the tongue-speakers. There were no loners among the tongue-speakers. They banded together and were mutually supporting. We never met a deeply involved tongue-speaker who did not have some leader to whom he looked for guidance. Even in casual questioning about their glossolalia experiences, tongue-speakers very quickly mentioned the name of the person whom they revered as their model for tongue-speaking."

“We have received several messages to go into all the world and preach the gospel, and we must obey the command. A PART OF OUR LABOR WILL BE TO TEACH THE CHURCHES THE USELESSNESS OF SPENDING YEARS OF TIME PREPARING MISSIONARIES FOR WORK IN FOREIGN LANDS WHEN ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS TO ASK GOD for power and then have faith that the power will come” (Parham, quoted in Kansas City Times, Jan. 27, 1901).

Alfred Garr and his wife went to India expecting to speak in supernatural languages, but they quickly learned that it was a delusion. May Law and Rosa Pittman went to Japan expecting to preach in Japanese but when they found that no one could understand their “tongues” they moved on to Hong Kong, thinking that they must have the gift of Chinese instead, but they were no more successful there. T.J. McIntosh was the first Pentecostal missionary to Macau, and though he fully expected to speak fluent Chinese his hopes were soon dashed.

“Numerous other Pentecostal missionaries went abroad believing they had the miraculous ability to speak in the languages of those to whom they were sent. These Pentecostal claims were well known at the time. S.C. Todd of the Bible Missionary Society investigated eighteen Pentecostals who went to Japan, China, and India ‘expecting to preach to the natives in those countries in their own tongue,’ and found that by their own admission ‘in no single instance have [they] been able to do so.’ AS THESE AND OTHER MISSIONARIES RETURNED IN DISAPPOINTMENT AND FAILURE, PENTECOSTALS WERE COMPELLED TO RETHINK THEIR ORIGINAL VIEW OF SPEAKING IN TONGUES” (Robert Mapes Anderson, Vision of the Disinherited: The Making of American Pentecostalism).

A woman and a bald headed, 4-eyed chink are the face of """Modern Christianity""". LOL!

No matter how stupid you think Bible folks are gonna get, they always get way more stupid.

That came from California though. And it's prefiguration in the Holiness Movent began in the south. A lot (but by no means most or all) of the crazy stuff you associate with American christianity actually comes from the South.

Not anymore than you can be sure Jesus hears your prayers, anon. It's a faith thing.
> Is this very common in mega churches?
Megachurches eat and breathe flashyness, so I doubt you'd like them. But it really depends on the megachurch.

Lmao.
Vaguely related to this is the TV documentary Marjoe. It's from the 70s but I like it a lot. There's this scene where he recounts the story of how he basically faked a miracle while preachng.
>thinking that they must have the gift of Chinese instead, but they were no more successful there.
I bet they literally went to random people on the street making random noises at them while they kind of just stared at them. I wonder who broke it to them. Like was there a white guy who did business in the city a lot and asked them why they kept talking Gibberish to passersby? Did a local convert tell them? Did they figure it out themselves?

Its really weird. And to cope when they got blown out in Asia, they redefined speaking in tongues from xenolossia to glossolalia. And now we have this modern cringe movement that tries to pass off what's described in Acts (Xenolossia) as what they are doing in their churches. A lot of this would be avoided if English speakers weren't using "speaking in tongues" to refer to two different words.

They do many strange and stupid things. Like handling Snakes. And this is before we get into the con-men, which there are many because anyone can be a priest in those religions. Most of the faith/miracle nonsense is genuine, but the moment you get to Miracle pastors it's 99% a con.
