The Monopoly on Violence by the state is a hallmark of functioning societies. Places where the government is the sole legitimate user of violence to obtain goals are almost always much safer and comfortable than those that have decended into tribalism or have warlords running patchwork empires. That’s because the state is much more easily held accountable for its’ actions. You accuse the sheriff of unlawfully killing your brother? If there’s evidence you’re telling the truth there’s a good chance he’s going to jail. Accuse the local warlord? He’s probably going to shoot you, too.
