These days if the mafia tries shaking someone down that's what can very likely happen. I've seen a few headlines over the years of mobsters getting arrested for extortion or an attempt to shake down a restaurant. Easier nowadays with the FBI breathing down organized crime's neck.

Back in the day the mafia was a much scarier thing and people just gave in thinking it was better than dying. Going to the police wouldn't guarantee not getting hurt.
