Why did so many regional varities of buddhism turn into backward, Superstitious folk beliefs? Some of them hardly distinguishable from hinduism.
just want to say it makes me very sad how those statues are treated in muslim countries
>>18101891east and south asian both don't have greek philosophy.
>>18101891A perfect picture for just how sub-human Muslims really are. Just a dull, dumb, inbred idiot grinning like a savage in front of a beautiful ancient piece of indigenous art built by his own ancestors, and all so he can impress Lord Zutt. Pathetic.
>>18102072Akshually Mullah Omar did it out of spite after he noticed westerners cared more about the statues than the afghan people not because of religion
>>18101891Buddhism doesn't have enough of that "All of your traditional beliefs are from demons and if you don't abandon them in favor of our beliefs then you'll be tortured forever" energy that Christianity has.
>>18102380why should westerners care about 'afghan people'also the money they invested for the Buddhas would have helped Afghanistan in the long termbut inbred goat fuckers brainwashed by (((wahhabis))) are not known for planning ahead
>>18102380based
>>18102475The Taliban are deobandis
>>18102595Heavily infiltrated by wahhabi crypto-jews
>>18102072On one hand they did it out of hatred for the Buddha, which is badBut on the other hand idolatry is also against the Buddha’s teachings, which were all about detachment (idols are attachment to a being).
I have such mixed feelings about Buddhism. The four noble truths, the noble eightfold paths, the five aggregates, the five precepts, the wisdom realizing emptiness, the whole approach to universal compassion, etc. all of this stuff has such a real meaningful impact on reducing a person's suffering and bringing joy to other sentient beings. But then there's stuff like "the Buddha's son was born six years after he had sex," or "the Earth is flat," or "strong winds cause earthquakes," or "your body will literally physically turn into a rainbow when you die if you follow the dharma closely enough," or "the Buddha could teleport and shapeshift," or "the Buddha was omniscient and knew there were only four continents" that put the validity of a lot of the Buddha's teachings into question; this is putting aside that it's hard to verify what teachings were things the Buddha actually said and which were written hundreds of years after his death, though some people such as the Dalai Lama handwave this concern by saying "If the writings describe practices that work then they must have been divinely inspired, and therefore are the word of the Buddha himself."
>>18103994There's a considerable rift between theological Buddhists and secular Buddhists. The theological Buddhists accuse secular Buddhists of perverting the dharma, creating a schism, acting superior to "real" Buddhists, and of generally missing the point of everything because the Buddha was supposedly perfect, omniscient, and super-human, and therefore he transcends all of our scientific understanding of things. The secular Buddhists accuse theological Buddhists of being elitist, superstitious, orientalist, and of generally being behind-the-times.Despite my criticisms of the Buddha, I still consider myself a Buddhist and I don't see myself as superior to theological Buddhists. Thich Quang Duc fucking lit himself on fire and didn't move or scream, I think that speaks enough to the efficacy of his practice, and he wasn't a secular Buddhist. Clearly even if I disagree with some of these concepts, they aren't a hindrance to a person's practice. I'm happy for theological Buddhists because their future is more certain for them than it is for myself, and I see them as my superiors in my practice anyway.
>>18102380Oh! He did it out of spite because westerners thought they had a better chance of preserving a priceless piece of cultural architecture after noticing that all the gibs for sandniggers were going missing and being stolen by corrupt officials? Well, that makes it BASED! Thanks Mullah Omar, what a wonderful social justice activist you are! What the fuck is your problem
>>18102743>But on the other hand idolatry is also against the Buddha’s teachings, which were all about detachment (idols are attachment to a being).I know the Buddha himself said he was against idols of himself being constructed, but it's also commonly held in Buddhism that it is highly meritorious to behold images of the Buddha. I can't remember where it was said, but it was said that even a person looking hatefully toward an image of the Buddha as as meritorious as performing a million mantras because in looking at the Buddha they are being exposed to the dharma, no matter how subtly, when they might otherwise never have been exposed to it in this lifetime.
>>18102475>Expecting the most retarded group of savages on the planet to think about the long term economic benefits of world-famous statuesDon’t bother. When Afghans and some Muslims tell you this story about Mullah Omar blowing it up out of spite, they don’t see it as retarded, embarrassing, and pathetic like we humans do, they think it’s noble, deep, honorable, romantic, it’s almost a tearjerker of a story for them. They don’t understand how utterly absurd it sounds as a justification.
>>18102603>Taliban are infiltrated by crypto-JewsUnsurprisingly, considering Pashtuns/Pakhtuns/Pukhtoons/Pakhtoons/Pathans/Afghans are basically Jews.
If you believe the Buddha really attained omniscience under the Bodhi tree, with perfect insight into past and future, then it must also naturally follow that He understood the form "Buddhism" would take in the future from the moment He decided to teach. He must have known that opening His mouth would naturally set in motion a historical process that would lead to things like the Buddhist councils and eventually the lotus sutra and so on, even if He the Buddha Himself did not necessarily deliver these sutras with His own mouthThe Avatamsaka says that the myriad worlds are as they are because the Dharma requires them to be as such, and that this is one of their causes for arisingAnother cause is that they are created out of the minds of the Bodhisattvas - there are beings that actively create them with consciousnessWhen you try to view time and space in a non-linear, consciousness-created way, everything is different
>>18104012Where is the honor though?I see it as gibsmedat slaves lashing out and cutting the nose to spite the faceIf he had done it for religious reasons I can see how they would cheer him on, although it would still be retarded as so many other Muslim rulers came and went and they never touched the BuddhasBut the idiot even came out and said it himself he blew them up because 'muh people starving'it's pathetic to say the least

>>18104676>Where is the honor though?>I see it as gibsmedat slaves lashing out and cutting the nose to spite the face >If he had done it for religious reasons I can see how they would cheer him on, although it would still be retarded as so many other Muslim rulers came and went and they never touched the Buddhas>But the idiot even came out and said it himself he blew them up because 'muh people starving'>it's pathetic to say the leastThe “honor” is in the spite. I know it’s difficult to even comprehend, but you have to understand that the Pashtun mentality and the code of Pashtunwali is like living on a different planet, or 3000 years ago. Obviously not all are like this, but most of those who are rural, or those who are born urban but choose a live of fighting in the countryside subscribe to this mindset. “A Pashtun is never truly at peace, except for when he is at war.”The honor is in the resentment, the spite, the uncompromising nature with which he decides to destroy the statues without hesitation out of bitterness. Many Afghan Muslims see this spiteful story of destroying these ancient, priceless cultural artifacts as an incredibly inspiring and even romantic one. The disbelievers admire the statue more than they care for the people who inhabit the land (which isn’t their responsibility to begin with), so Mullah Omar blows it up in a narcissistic, crab mentality fashion and acts like they’re the victims because they weren’t getting gibs, in their minds this is the ultimate justice, and the act of destruction was the ultimate lesson sent to “the kuffar” who they simultaneously despise yet want gibs from. The photo I’ve attached is an infographic about Pashtunwali (The Code of the Pashtuns) that dictates their way of live. You can see here, from the perspective of a Pashtun, Mullah Omar’s actions in destroying Bamiyan fulfilled and exemplified the obligations of Revenge, Loyalty (to nation), Arbitration, Bravery, and Honor.
illiterate peasants will believe illiterate peasant thingshistorically, the cities tended to have "proper" religious practices
>>18103994>>18103996This is a simple logic trap that can cause conversation on essentially any subject to revert to a purity spiral. >if one part of the whole is questionable, why not another?Martin Luther split with other protestants and wasted the latter part of his life arguing over the real presence of Christ's body in the eucharist because it's revolting to common sense, but losing it was a slippery slope to no christianity. Frankly, it has nothing to do with the teaching of Christ or the important positions of the church, the ones important for life. nor do your weird ancient buddhist beliefs have anything to do with the good ideas. A philosophy without flaws is a highly contrived philosophy without the freedom to make mistakes.
>>18105299This is why christianity and all other ideologies maintain a tradition as far back as they can. It's a defensive structure against "SOURCE???" posting. At some point, it's because God said so.
