Did Christianity cause the rise in Atheism through its claim that God intimately cares about your suffering and struggling to reconcile that with the reality of evil in the world? Paganism, outside of maybe Neoplatonism but that's a weird offshoot that morphed into Christianity anyway, wouldn't really run into this problem because the gods don't intimately care about your suffering and so reconciling their existence with evil doesn't run into any contradiction.

Christianity's main goal is to reconcile the evil in the world. That's at least partly the goal of most religions and mysticism. Even the Navajo had tales of boogymen that prowled the wilderness which were more than likely just psychopathic murderers which they mystified into otherworldly beings to come to terms with squat buck getting mauled by a bear or killed by a rogue The problem was that the Catholic church became institutionally corrupt

Atheism only came about through it because it's pretty casual about belief (no death penalty for leaving as in something like Islam) and it isn't superstitious (I.e. ancient greek pagans hated atheists and used the term as a derogatory phrase since not honoring the gods would've brought about disaster and pain). Christianity teaches God is a loving Father who even makes rain fall on the unrighteous to bless his enemies, so atheism basically only exists because Christianity provides enough stability to enable atheism
