It wasn't counter to Christianity, it was because the Temple was destroyed and the priesthood scattered. Without any central leadership these Jerusalem elites become leaders of other Jewish communities and spread Rabbinic Judaism. The Rabbinic group wasn't going to ever do it though, they were extreme in trying to have a 'pure' Jewish faith.
