Spain has been going down hill ever since the collapse of the new world colonial states. Hundreds of years of managed decline. Shouldn’t be that way though. People for centuries looked for the best style to illustrate reality, then photography came and suddenly all you had to do was push a button and get a more or less perfect illustration. So artists started experimenting with the medium to try and convey something different that just a picture itself. Honestly what you call "crap" is arguably the most interesting period in the entire history of art - people just going wild and trying all sorts of shit.
