In the Quran, the story of Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son (interpreted as Ismail in Islamic tradition) in Surah As-Saffat (37:99-107) is central to the concept of sacrifice. Sufis view this not merely as a physical act but as a profound symbol of surrendering the ego and worldly attachments to God. The animal sacrifice that replaced the son signifies offering one's lower self (nafs) to attain closeness to the Divine.

Sufis interpret the act of sacrifice as a metaphor for purifying the heart. The physical act of slaughtering an animal is seen as an outward representation of "slaughtering" base desires, pride, and selfishness. For example, Rumi, a prominent Sufi mystic, often emphasized sacrificing the ego to achieve spiritual awakening and unity with God.

>It is neither their flesh nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is your piety that reaches Him. This is how He has subjected them to you, so that you may proclaim Allah's greatness for having guided you. And give glad tidings to those who do good.

Sufis highlight this verse to underscore that the essence of sacrifice lies in the intention (niyyah) and devotion behind it, not the material act. The ritual is a means to cultivate taqwa (God-consciousness) and selflessness, aligning one's will with God's. Sufi teachings emphasize love and compassion as core principles. The distribution of sacrificial meat to the poor and community during Eid al-Adha reflects the Sufi value of serving others and fostering unity. This act of giving is seen as a way to transcend selfishness and embody divine mercy.

For Sufis, every religious act, including sacrifice, is a step toward fana (annihilation of the self in God) and baqa (subsistence in God). The sacrifice symbolizes surrendering personal desires to merge with the divine will, a central theme in Sufi poetry and teachings, such as those of Ibn Arabi or Al-Ghazali.

Some Sufi scholars extend the concept of sacrifice to a universal level, seeing it as a reminder of the interconnectedness of life. The act acknowledges the divine gift of sustenance and the responsibility to honor it through gratitude, humility, and ethical treatment of creation.
