The idea that anyone is going to be raptured before the tribulation is not biblical. That is wishful thinking from people uncomfortable with the idea of extreme persecution and suffering for an extended period around the whole world, and who think persisting to the end in such a state would be too difficult.But the imagery of the rapture, being taken up into the air, does apply to the 2nd coming of Christ and is biblical.

It has far more to do with creating a contrived excuse to be a zionist basically. And I guess the reason why that is being promoted so much since the 20th century is because it's profitable (i.e. they pay you money to promote zionism and pretend it's biblical theology).
