How EXACTLY did the congo go from a kingdom, to a Portuguese colony, to a belgian colony? When did, i guess england? Germany? decide "lets go beat up portugal because this new country of Belgium needs a colony"? What the hell happened?
The actual kingdom of Congo was in Angola which remained a Portuguese colony. Belgian Congo was a larp name given to the region it was a tribal unexplored area.

Eventually French missionaries in the region came into conflict with the british backed slave trade in the region. These French missionaries were pushed out of the region into Tanzania where they founded German East Africa where they hoped to crush the slave trade. I will say there was a conspiracy between the British and the Arab slave traders in order to acquire ivory and maybe even slaves. I read earlier before that the English were smuggling enough weapons for a full scale war through the congo to the arab slave traers which served as a transfer point into German East Africa. I always suspected they were waging a proxy war against the germans from there but it could have been something even shadier. The propagandization of the genocide (actually disease and famine caused by over-development) and the shaming of Leopold was a cover story for Leopold executing British gun runners disguised as missionaries that were delivering guns to the arabs
