Russias oriental despotism is inherited from their slavery under the Mongols. This was followed by the period where Tsars kept their people as slaves through the boyars. The dumb Russians always got angry at the boyars for their enslavement and whenever rebellion was near the Tsar murdered a couple of boyars, got the peoples favor and changed nothing.

Unlike in Europe, Russias power structure was always centralized. Tsar, Boyars, slaves. The Tsar ruled from the beginning as an autocrat and could do whatever he wanted to the boyars, and under the boyars there were only serfs, while in Europe there was multi-level feudalism and in some places free peasants (Finland). The Orthodox Church and the merchant class also didn't defy the Tsars absolute power.

In European feudalism the King was just the richest noble and he could demand taxes and military service from those under him. If the king tried to become a tyrant by demanding say a 5% tax increase then the nobles would replace him with another King. Also the Pope was above all Kings. The system also meant that the lowest nobles, the knights, were all small landowners with rights. Individualism comes from this and from the Christian idea that God judges people as individuals for their actions. This idea only really exists in the West.

In Russia they have been under the Mongol system for 800 years where the Tsar decides everything and the individual has no value except to be a slave to the Tsar. The Orthodox Church has always been subservient to the Tsar and has theology that emphasizes accepting a shitty life and being obedient. No wonder then that when in 1917 the Tsar finally loses his power because of incest the Russians return to Ivan the Terrible level totalitarianism, because the ending of serfdom in 1861 was still bitterly remembered as too western. Russian culture is superficially European, but in its values and mentality it is closer to China where there has also always been an Emperor, middlemen and slaves.

There's nothing special about Russia and Europeans were also depostic absolutist shitholes not too long ago.

Americans have a Soviet-style authoritarian system except with the added spectacle of "elections" and a strong culture section that produces cool media and movies.

That's true but Russians also kind of own actually, and are masters at adapting to their psychotic governments. Like they have slavery on the outside, but on the inside it's different and you don't really know what they're thinking. They're more of a behavorial, survivalist-oriented sort of people rather than an ideological people. Putin is also gonna die. That is an objective statement about what is going to happen in reality. This is a saying dating back to the 60s I think, «B Poccии нyжнo жить дoлгo» — "In Russia, one needs to live long." Russia is also an untapped source of material for T.V., novels, and video game settings. It's not really a trad place, it's more like Zoolander.
